The iPad can select between different soundtracks for movies obtained from the iTunes Store but I have so far not seen a solution that can create such movie files from a DVD. What I referred to wasĪ video file with multiple soundrtacks and multiple subtitles The point I was referring to was not 'merely' watching a movie in iTunes or on the iPad, that works fine with most default settings of Handbrake. Select the correct preset in HandBreak and you can watch your movie through iTunes on the iPad, iPhone, iPod, and AppleTV. And if I have to use VLC anyway, I can just use the ripped DVD data directly, the only thing embedding multiple soundtracks and subtitles into a single video file via Handbrake would offer me would be a smaller file size (and some additional compression artefacts). I know Handbrake can do this, just not in a manner the iPad (or iTunes) can read it.
I have looked for software that can do this for a long time. Nothing stops you to make video file with multiple soundrtacks and multiple subtitles. But I've found that I can actually watch the video a lot more if I do a simple rip with Handbreak. If you're looking to preserve all the extra features of a DVD (languages, directors commentary, etc.), then creating a disc image is your only option. A lot of sanity was saved with that idea! I ripped some of her shows and put them on my old iPhone. I just play the movie in DVD Player first and see which title the movie is on and then select that title in Handbreak.Īs for not watching the DVDs you own, just wait until your 3 yo figures out what movies are (if she hasn't already). The hardest part sometimes is figuring out which title (track) to rip. For a free application, it works pretty well. Noirdesir, it looks like MacX DVD Ripper Pro might be what I'm looking for. I've used both RipIt and Handbrake in the past, and neither have always worked as desired for me (although Handbrake is certainly pretty sophisticated). In reality, my wife and I find that we don't often watch the DVDs that we own, but I'd like to save them anyway. And given that we have literally no where else really to put the DVDs, I just want to get them on my hard drive to enjoy them via either Apple TV or an iPad. I have a 3-year old and a 15-month old, and they recently discovered where I keep all of our DVDs, and they have found that they love to take them all out of the cabinet and throw them around.
